How do you stop him drinking and driving?

Sounds easy doesn't it? I've tried them all, hiding the keys, going away and taking them with me, telling him directly he should not be driving, buying him a breathalyser, invoking killing a child and praying the neighbours will dob him in it.

He thinks that having had 10 hours sleep he is fine, maybe he is but after the sustained drinking of the last 48 hours, I am sure he can't be.

I have considered having the car fitted with a device which requires you to breathe into a device before you can start it and informing the police but unfortunately both of these are likely to destroy my marriage.

The trouble is he is physically a big man and very persuasive with it.

  1. I have just stumbled on your blog. You cannot stop him. He is his own master and must take the consequences. I have been in the same place as you. It is not a happy one.

  2. I understand completely your situation. I also live with an alcoholic who insists he can drive. See my blog for his explanation -- it is humorous but sad.

This is what I would do -- every time he gets in the car, immediately call the police and tell them it is absolutely necessary that they pick him up. Also tell them that he must not know it was you who called in the complaint. In the US you get your license taken away after a number of drunk driving violations.

You're in a difficult position, but please remember that everyone outside your home befores a potential victim. When he is driving drunk he is yielding a lethal weapon and it's rolling down the street.

Visit my blog -- you'll see your not alone.
